Lab 6 Review: Cetaceans and Subungulates-- Answers

1. Shamu is in the Suborder Odontoceti.

2. Baleen whales are in the Suborder Mysticeti.

3. Family Delphinidae.

4. The Family Delphinidae ranges through all oceans and seas, some rivers.

5. You can tell the difference between Iniidae and Delphinidae by looking at the shape of the lower jaw. Delphinids have a very short madibular syphisis, so that if you look at it from a dorsal or ventral view, it looks like a 'V', Iniids have a long lower mandibular symphysis, making the jaw more in the shape of a 'Y'.

6. The range of Iniids is fresh water rivers and coasts of Asia and South America

7. Elephants belong to Order Proboscidea and Family Elephantidae.

8. Hyraxes belong to Order Hyracoidea and Family Procaviidae.

9. Hyraxes range throughout Africa and the Middle East.

10. Procaviids have separated tusk-like incisors that are triangular in cross-section, and slightly pectinate lower incisors.

11. You should feed the manatees some kind of plant material (they find romaine lettuce quite tasty).

12. The manatee skull in general looks like Mr. Magoo, there are no incisors or canines, just lophodont incisors, the jugal and squamosal do not actually touch in the zygomatic arch, and it's very heavy.

13. Manatees are in Family Trichechidae and Order Sirenia.

14. Manatees are in Subclass Eutheria.
