Words of the Week- Chiropterans


Patagium: A web of skin; often specialized for flying or gliding.

Uropatagium: Web of skin between hind legs and often enclosing the tail of a bat.

Calcar: Spur of cartilage that projects medially from the ankle of many species of bats that helps to support the uropatagium.

Sanguinivorous: Feeding primarily on blood.

Tragus: Projection of the lower medial margin of the pinna in most microchiropteran bats.

Antitragus: Small fleshy projection on the postero-ventral margin of the pinnae of some bats.
