Lab 5 Review: Ungulates-- Answers

1. Aunt Edna belongs to the family Equidae, and she would have been mesaxonic.

2. Nephew Jake belongs to Family Giraffidae, and he would have lived in Africa.

3. Nanny-Pampers belongs to Family Hippopotamidae and Nanny-Pampers would have been semi-aquatic.

4. Gramps belongs to Family Rhinocerotidae.

5. The three Suborders in Order Artiodactyla are: Suiformes, Tylopoda and Ruminantia.

6. When determining whether a skull is a bovid or a cervid, look for the lacrimal foramina: cervids have two holes and bovids have one.

7. Uncle Jangles belongs to Family Suidae.

8. Skulls that have unbranched horns with a boney core belong to Family Bovidae.

9. Family Antilocapridae.

10. Odocoileus virginianus.

11. The moose has shorter nasal bones in relation to the maxilla and premaxilla compared to the elk.

12. Horns are unbranched, and most antlers are branched. Antlers are shed, horns are not. Antlers are composed completely of bone, while horns have a boney core covered with a keratin sheath.

13. The secret password is Camelidae.

14. Cousin Stella belongs to the Family Tragulidae, and she may have lived in Africa or Asia.

15. Tapirs live in South America and Southeast Asia (doesn't this kid have an encyclopedia?).
