Lists of structures to know for Animal Diversity

For Terri's BS110 sections 11 and 13 only (unless your TA tells you otherwise)

General dissection pointers:
· READ CAREFULLY AS YOU GO!!!!!!
· Make shallow cuts

Specific pointers per specimen
Squid
· Lay flat
· Use scissors, not scalpel
· Mind the ink sac!

Earthworm
· Make shallow cuts!!!!!
· Dorsal side up (dorsal side is darker)
· Pin both ends

Sea Star
· Use scissors for the cross section and the ventral dissection
· You are dissecting to different levels in the different arms, make sure that you read about this!

Lamprey
· For saggital section, straighten out the animal, and try to get your cut straight down the middle, through the pineal eye and nasal opening; cut all of the way through
· Then cut vertically through the 5th gill slit (this is different that what the book says), and take the side of the animal all the way off
· Make a ventral cut from the last gill slit to the anus
· Cut a cross section at the level of the anus

You should be able to describe respiration, circulation, digestion, reproduction, locomotion and any sensory ability in each of the 4 animals, in addition to the identifying and describing the function of the structures listed below.
